How To Approach Guests For Your Podcast

How To Feel Confident Approaching Guests For Your Podcast

When it comes to inviting guests onto your podcast, as a content marketer you might feel apprehensive when arranging spoken word interviews. In today’s podcasting top tip video I explore why this is a natural feeling, and some best ways to tame the fear of interviewing guests.

Some of the questions I’ve received recently on the blog and through email,  is around approaching guest for your podcast. So what makes it so scary to approach guests?

Well actually when you’re approaching a interview it’s not really something that’s natural especially if you haven’t met them before. It’s worth if you can meeting them in person first at something like a conference but that’s not always possible. You might have conversed by email but you may not have actually talked to your guest before. The first time you speak to anyone of course you are going to be a little bit intrepid because you don’t know if it’s going to work out or not, you may be scared of what they think of you, of what they say etc. that’s very natural.

Think about it this way, think about the value that your guest is going to provide for your listeners, think about why you invited your guest onto your show in the first place? You invited them because they have some amazing things to say and some amazing content and knowledge to share, so focus on that and that’s going to be really what gets you over that fear.

And also remember as a podcaster you’re going to be the person that’s also learning things, you’re the interviewer who’s going to be drawing out  the information from your guests, so it’s important to focus on those questions, focus on the value that the listener is going to get out of that interview and that fear will go away

Ultimately the person on the other end of the phone or the other end of skype is going to be just as nervous as you so your goal is to put them at ease, and when you’re interviewing guests, its important to come across as confident,

There’s a thing called power posing, Amy Cuddy, who’s an eminent psychologist in the US, if you haven’t seen Amy’s videos on power posing head on over to Tedx, she has a great Ted talk on power posing, that can really give you some confidence before you start an interview on Skype with a guest

Power posing might seem a bit strange at first but it definitely works, i can recommend it, i do it myself with power posing before every single interview, because yes suprise suprise even though I’ve been publishing audio online since 2001, I still get nervous too before doing an interview, its totally naturally, it’s a human instinct.

But ultimately if you can push through that and think of the value you’re going to get at the end of the interview and the amazing audio you are going to be able to edit for your podcast, ultimately it’s going to attract lots of people it’s going to attract followers from the person you’re interviewing as well, so there are so many benefits to interviewing guests, focus on the benefits and your fear will go away.
